Oftentimes, we forget to appreciate the marvelous people and entities that aren’t part of our daily routine.

Did you know that some Mexican pre-hispanic cultures from the 16th century are still alive today?

That's the case of the Huichol culture, which is settled deep in the heart of the "Sierra Madre Occidental" in Mexico and covers the states of Nayarit, and Jalisco.

They refer to themselves as Wixaritaris, which means "The People" in their language. However, they're most known as Huicholes.

Nowadays, this vibrant culture is one of the most fascinating tribes in Mexico and globally as they're a sacred part of the larger Mexican culture, and its art stands out from other indigenous groups worldwide.

They can be found mostly throughout Riviera Nayarit, and here you will learn more about their proudly preserved culture to give a glimpse into the multicultural ways of life in Mexico.

Even though Huicholes have been part of our cultural wealth, they're still with us today thanks to their endless attributes that help them survive social, economic and cultural changes over time.

Huichol spiritual Ritual

Some of the most important sacred rituals always include peyote plants that in order to preserve this ancient part of the Mexican cultural patrimony the government allows them to legally use it for religious ceremonies.

Symbols & Art

Huichol Art

Their art is rooted in religion. As most of Huicholes' aspects, the art is ruled by bright colors too and it goes from brightly colored designs to yarn paintings with different patterns. Each piece is unique to the Huicholes as they find their designs in holy inspiration, not standard prints.

On the other hand, Huichol music is played with a few instruments that evolved over time to modern ones, since now they use the violin, flute, guitar, drums, and a gourd rattle.

The Huichol culture has been treasured since immemorial times, thanks to the richness of their history, art, beliefs, colors, rituals, etc.
